The 1975 – Being Funny In A Foreign Language
Look out everyone, it looks like we’ve got a new Number 1 album on our hands. Indie icons The 1975, led by the enigmatic Matty Healy, have returned with Being Funny In A Foreign Language and it’s got all the right ingredients to be one of the biggest Dirty Hits of the year!
Many were left scratching their heads when the Manchester boys brought out last LP Notes on a Conditional Form, the sprawling multi-genre experiment that tried its hand at everything from electronica to indie rock, jazz, R&B and beyond! But now, they are back on course with a focused offering that makes for a more cohesive record, sure to please their hardcore fanbase and new listeners alike.
The recording process of Being Funny In A Foreign Language saw sessions split between Real World Studios in Wiltshire, United Kingdom and Electric Lady Studios in New York, and largely self-produced by the band, with extra assistance courtesy of Bleachers singer Jack Antonoff. The eleven tracks are the summarisation of Healy making sense of his personal struggles, addressing them with a wry humour and a lean indie pop sound.
“Making the record – once we decided what it was – was a fucking breeze, but getting there was dreadful. It was rife with near relapses, mental health, and difficult, difficult times. When we got back on that stage we were like, ‘Haha! Right! This is what we fucking need, man! We’re comfortable here!” – Matty Healy

Alter Bridge – Pawns and Kings
Hard rockers Alter Bridge have turned it right up to eleven on their seventh arena-ready studio album Pawns and Kings; bringing all the blazing hot riffs, epic vocal melodies and downright dirty beats that you would hope and expect.
Singer /guitarist Myles Kennedy and former Creed band members Mark Tremonti (lead guitar), Brian Marshall (bass) and Scott Phillips (drums) have certainly smashed it, going heavier than ever before on ten punishing tracks that address global political issues as capture by producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette (Slash, Sevendust, Mammoth WVH).
“I think it just happened. I mean, I don’t know if it was intentional. I’m hearing that phrase used a lot: It’s a heavier Alter Bridge record. I think part of it is the production on it is a little more scaled down. I think it comes across a little rawer than some of our previous records where there’s a lot of layering, a lot of textures, which can sometimes, not all the time, kind of detract from that overall heavy factor. So, it was a conscious decision on our part and also with our producer Elvis that we were going to focus on being, I think just a little more to the point with things, not with every single song, but I think the majority of them, we tried to hold true to that idea.”
