JOHN – ‘Out Here On The Fringes’
What do you do when both bandmates share the same name? Make it the title of your devastatingly loud art rock two-piece of course!! Crystal Palace based noiseniks JOHN first impressed two years ago with their uncompromising debut album ‘God Speed In The National Limit’ and have now returned with successor LP ‘Out Here On The Fringes’ which pushes their sonic terror even further.
The pair have established a reputation for their fearsome live performance which they have certainly captured that primal element on their new record which was recently named as BBC 6 Music’s Album of the Day. Recorded at Bear Bites Horse Studio in East London with Wayne Adams, it’s a caustic acid burn of sardonic rage.
John tickets are currently available.
DERMOT KENNEDY – ‘Without Fear’
Combing folk, pop and hip hop, Irish singer Dermot Kennedy enthuses real heart and soul into his innovative music. And so, it comes as no surprise that his debut album ‘Without Fear’ topped the charts both here and in his homeland.
‘Without Fear’ features his stirring single ‘Outnumbered’ which remained in rotation on the BBC Radio 1 playlist for a staggering ten weeks due to popular demand. His fame is rapidly extending around the world and he has made live appearances in the UK on The Ellen Show and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Dermot Kennedy tickets are currently available.
BIG THIEF – ‘Two Hands’
Wait a minute. Didn’t Big Thief just release a record this year??! Turns out the Brooklyn based folk tinged indie rockers are feeling particularly prolific at the moment and have just dropped ‘Two Hands’ mere months after releasing their third LP ‘U.F.O.F.’. Whereas any other band would most likely be burnt out from such a huge endeavour, Big Thief continue to sound light and effortlessly elegant over ten tracks which range from the intimate to the densely atmospheric and euphorically triumphant.
Big Thief tickets are currently available.
LIGHTNING BOLT – ‘Sonic Citadel’
Hold onto your butts – Lightning Bolt are back! Somewhat ironically, Brian Gibson and Brian Chippendale (what is it with loud AF two-pieces sharing the same first name at the moment?) have been a bit quiet as late. However, not only have they recently re-released their seminal third album ‘Wonderful Rainbow’ but they have also just released their latest LP ‘Sonic Citadel’.
Of course, their new record is a brutal aural assault which takes a stripped-down approach to scuzzed up bass and machine gun drumming which makes the explosion of a tactical nuclear weapon seem like a damp squib in comparison. The sheer ferocity displayed makes it hard to believe that the pair first started getting complaints from neighbours over for blocks away twenty-five years ago
Lightning Bolt tickets are currently available.
RICHARD DAWSON – ‘2020’
‘2020’ is the sixth studio album from Newcastle songwriter Richard Dawson. Whilst its wonderfully eclectic and overflowing with charm, a casual listener could easily miss the dark subject matters contained within his avant-garde take on folk plus a bit of post punk which tackles issues of crushing bureaucracy, wage slavery, apathy and the discontent between the ruling class and the everyday people being failed by the lack of care and provision.
Dawson has also teamed up with acclaimed Left wing director Ken Loach to work on the score for upcoming film ‘Sorry We Missed You’ which addresses the dehumanising effects of zero hour contracts and the terrible effects they cause.
